Tyler Bright Hilton

Tyler Bright Hilton focuses his artistic practice on the development of a centralized fictional protagonist, Minmei Madelynne Pryor. Utilizing a variety of media such as silver-point drawing, watercolour, and intaglio printmaking techniques, he creates complex narrative imagery that conveys the moral, emotional, and psychological adventures of this character.

Tyler has been committed to use of etching as a primary medium in his practice since he was first introduced to the technique 15 years ago during his undergraduate studies. Inquired of his ongoing interest with etching, he comments:

“I am continually excited by the way printmaking combines the intimate, handmade qualities of drawing with the chilly and impersonal remove of the printing press. The formal restrictions provided by the medium can also be used to contain disjunctive pictorial languages and narrative tropes, harmonizing them in unexpected and potent ways. These qualities make etching the ideal medium to fuse the discordancy between the sentimental and dispassionate imagery I’m interested in exploring.”

Tyler has been working collaboratively with Laine Groeneweg in the Smokestack Analog Studio for 10 years. Most recently, his printmaking practice has expanded through experimentation with multi-coloured silkscreen as demonstrated in Idioglossia (echo).
