Niall McClelland

NIall McClelland - Tragedy, Ecstasy, Doom and so on, Pt. 3, 2022

Niall McClelland exploits the imperfections of readily accessible materials and fugitive techniques demonstrated in drawing, collage, photocopies and digital media forms. His abstractions recall the bold qualities of subcultural ephemera, alternative print media and popular culture detritus while embracing the tactility and inherently inconsistent characteristics of screen printing. The layered colours, variable ink finishes and detail densities of recent silkscreen works created for his 2022 solo-exhibition, Downtown, exemplify his re-contextualization of thematic influences in analog print – an artistic form equally repetitive and intentionally ephemeral by limitation.

Niall McClelland (b.1980, Toronto) lives and works in Toronto, ON. He graduated from Emily Carr University in Vancouver in 2004 and has been represented by Clint Roenisch gallery since 2010. Recent exhibitions of McClelland’s work have included “Hot Takes, No Sax”, Clint Roenisch (Toronto); “Bruce to Brock” Envoy Enterprises (New York City); “One Turn Outta Tune”, Eleanor Harwood (San Francisco); “Early Bird Runs Best”, Wil Aballe Art Projects (Vancouver) and “Magic for Beginners”, P.P.O.W. (New York City). His works have been published in Modern Painters, Canadian Art, ArtNews, Dazed, Monster Children, Adbusters, Lowdown, The Globe and Mail and The Toronto Star among others. Outside of his studio practice, McClelland has been awarded numerous public art commissions, most recently inclusive of projects for the OVO Toronto Raptors Practice Facility, CaMH, Etobicoke General Hospital, and Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland.
