Danny Custodio

Danny Custodio dedicates his photographic practice as a medium through which to investigate and capture the world around him. Professing his lack of artistic drive through his childhood, he nonetheless fell immediately in love with photography in high school after his first time in a darkroom. In his own words, “once I had a camera in hand, everything changed”.

Danny initially developed his own 35 mm black and white film prints by hand before retraining himself in the world of digital photographic methodologies that have since emerged as his primary medium. In recent years, Danny has applied use of digital techniques to his exploration and translation of cultural traditions (specifically those of his own heritage). He comments that photography,

“has really lent itself well to translating those traditions into my own visual language. I really like the concept of playing with how photography is supposed to capture the real, so I sometimes play with that ‘reality’. A theatrical documentary if you will.”

Danny Custodio holds a BFA in Photography from the Ontario College of Art and Design. His work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada and the United States and he has been the recipient of numerous visual arts awards and grants from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. Danny’s works have been featured in PREFIX PHOTO Magazine and Macleans Magazine, and may be found in private and public collections including those of the City of Toronto, the Canadian Pension Plan, and the City of St. Catharines. He currently lives and works in St. Catherines, ON.
