Agata Derda

Agata Derda has evolved a hybridized printmaking practice that integrates elements of linocut with digital overprint and Chine Collé techniques. Agata’s work presents a visual expression of her uniquely translated considerations of the interpersonal and psychological challenges of the human condition.

After leaving her Polish homeland at the age of 24, Agata was presented with an opportunity to experiment with a wide variety of artistic mediums in her early undergraduate education in Ireland at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. Though initially convinced that she would focus her artistic development in sculpture, her introduction to printmaking ultimately swayed her decision. Ever since, printmaking and drawing have together become the core disciplines that have informed the direction of her artistic practice. As Agata has commented,

“printmaking and drawing overlap and I have always loved to draw. This is the most relevant reason why etching and stone lithography were my favourite techniques at the Institute. And so here we are.”

Agata Derda undertook a BFA in Printmaking in the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology in Ireland, followed by completion of her MFA at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Her work has been the subject of solo-exhibitions in Canada, and numerous group-exhibitions internationally in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. Agata currently lives in Cambridge, producing her print works in Toronto and Hamilton based studios.
