Kristin Sjaarda investigates the intricacies of the ecosystem through photography. Influenced by the style and content of still-life paintings from the 17th century Dutch Golden Age, Sjaarda’s photographic adaptations present larger-than-life sized botanical arrangements that boast high-contrast lighting and amplified depth of visual clarity.
After the Storm is the second collaborative project between Sjaarda and Smokestack’s digital printmaker, Jonathan Groeneweg. In alignment with Sjaarda’s overarching interest, this piece was influenced by a particular landscape painting by Dutch Golden Age master, Johannes Vermeer. In a new direction, however, this painterly influence lent itself to the introduction of a painted background in Sjaarda’s work directly. Working collaboratively with Groeneweg, the photographic presentation of her unique still-life arrangement was further heightened through Groeneweg’s use of the PhaseOne IQ4 150 MP camera and capture system representing some of the most advanced tools in high-resolution imagery.
