Kareem-Anthony Ferreira explores experiences of cultural divergence and family history. Informed by his experience as a first-born Canadian with strong ties to his Trinidadian roots, Ferreira’s black portraiture investigates patterns of intersecting personal, familial and social identities. In My Grandparent’s Yard further expands on Ferreira’s practice through his use of family photographs as the narrative foundation for imagery expressed in printmaking. In this large silkscreen print, photographs of his family members are integrated amongst an abundance of vibrant natural elements. The work demonstrates a variety of silkscreen methods engaged – from CMYK half-tone processes to hand-painted films – to share a (21) layered re-imagining of verdant family memories.
