Sylvia Galbraith

Sylvia Galbraith - The Artist's House, 2022

Sylvia Galbraith dedicates her artistic practice to photography. Exploration and expression in the medium has seen her take a particular interest in early photographic processes such as pinhole and camera obscura techniques. Gabraith’s recent projects demonstrate her use of camera obscura to integrate investigations of landscape and buildings with a focus on deep-rooted connections between people and their places of origin. Speaking to her latest body of work, she comments:

“I connect the built environment with exterior views that have remained constant, conceptualizing the notion of within/without, terms that are inseparable in the minds of those who depend on the land and sea for sustenance, regardless of what village or country they might live in…Working in small houses, churches, a luxury resort and others, my images describe how a building, while often reflecting social differences or human history, also witnesses the incremental situational changes brought about by the relentless progression of time within a location”

Sylvia Galbraith has exhibited her work in solo and group-exhibitions across Canada and her work may be found in corporate, public and private collections in Canada and internationally. Galbraith has participated in residencies in Newfoundland, Banff, and northern Ontario, and been a recipient of grants from the Canada Council of the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council. She is currently based in Fergus, ON.
