Anna Church’s artistic practice intersects the realms of sculpture and photography in the making of digital prints that belie their 3-dimensional origins. Her 2023 collaborative piece, Illumination, represents an expansion of her characteristic working process into new spatial and technical territory. Through the collaborative making of the piece, Smokestack’s digital printmaker – Jonathan Groeneweg – joined Church in her studio to photograph a new sculptural arrangement with the PhaseOne camera and capture system. The focus-stacking, high-resolution imagery capabilities of this tool contributed to a work existing between the bounds of painting and photography; painted glass panels captured in such a way that the depth of the abstract construction is all but entirely obscured.
