Yael Brotman
Yael Brotman has fostered a multi-disciplinary art practice through which she engages sculpture, installation, and printmaking disciplines. Informed by her interest in architecture, Yael’s artworks present fictional forms created by her collaged integration of recognizable and abstract elements.
Yael was first introduced to printmaking during her visual arts studies at Central Tech and OCAD University. Upon graduation, she was encouraged to join Open Studio as a member where she continued her preferred work in etching (drypoint) and silkscreen print techniques. As she describes, she recognized that the elements of surprise granted through these analog processes was an exciting compliment to her love of experimentation. In more recent years, Yael’s creative experimentations have come to include investigations into a wider scope of printmaking specialties. Mirroring the graphic assemblage of visual forms presented in her work, Yael’s print practice has come to employ a labour-intensive hybridization of physically collaged analog printed materials with digital imaging, editing and printing techniques.
Yael Brotman has presented her work in solo and group exhibitions across Canada and internationally in Berlin, Spain, New York and Egypt. Brotman has been awarded grants and residencies in China, Ireland, Haida Gwaii and is an educator and advocate for artists’ rights, sitting on CARFAC and the boards of other arts organizations.
