Panya Clark Espinal’s 2023 collaborative project, Material Redistribution – Hamilton, investigates the power of material engagements to build connections with physical surroundings while playing with the boundaries between sculpture and image-making. In the making of this series, Clark Espinal and Smokestack’s analog printmaker – Laine Groeneweg – foraged bricks from urban Hamilton historic sites for material re-use in printmaking. The varied bricks collected were broken down into prepared brick-dust and used to create a uniquely formulated pigment for silkscreen printing.
Bloom 1 is the first of a three-piece series of radially composed, hand-pulled silkscreen prints created from this brick-dust pigment.
