Description

Todd’s Published Edition, The Ghosts on the Fringe, expands on his distinctive visual vocabulary, revealing a meticulously-detailed collection of symbolic images and patterns merged layer-by-layer through the process of silkscreen print. With collaborative support from Smokestack’s analog printmaker, Laine Groeneweg, Todd’s imagery was assembled using 7 distinct layers of shape and colour that brought this new, richly narrative portrait to life. A custom frame by Superframe presents a vibrant finishing.

Jon Todd’s diverse portfolio has been presented and collected on both sides of the Atlantic with a career spanning over two-decades. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions across eastern Canada and internationally in the United States, Germany, Denmark and Switzerland. Todd currently lives and works in Hamilton, ON.

Jon Todd - The Ghosts on the Fringe quantity

Jon took a very analog approach to creating "Ghosts on the Fringe". From start to finish, the his hand and mark-making was part of the process and ultimately the final work. Each layer that makes up this 7-layer silkscreen print began with a hand-drawn film representing a unique colour element to be printed. Pictured here is Jon carefully drawing each layer one mark at a time!
Each hand-drawn film is individually rendered onto nylon mesh that is stretched a frame. This is possible by coating that mesh with a light-sensitive emulsion that is exposed to UV light. Once exposed and rinsed in water, a stencil forms and the film image is transposed onto the mesh.
Once the screens were created for each layer, the inks were carefully mixed by hand to achieve just the right colour and richness. By creating colours that had levels of transparency built in, we were able to develop secondary colours in the print where layers overlap to create new colours. It's one of the most rewarding and exciting parts of creating prints in this way!
For each colour in the image, a separate screen is created. Ink is poured on the screen and is sequentially printed by drawing the ink through the mesh using a rubber squeegee blade.
While not always necessary, it's always helpful having multiple sets of hands for running silkscreen projects. Pictured here, is Laine & Jon at the screen printing vacuum table. As soon as one print impression completes it is taken to the drying rack as another takes its place to continue the run. It's important with acrylic-based inks, like the ones used in this project, to move swiftly and smoothly as to not allow the ink to dry in the screen mesh.
Layer by layer, the image begins to evolve and take shape as ink hits the paper surface. The hands stay busy at work through this entire process of pulling the squeegee across the screen mesh to deposit rich ink!
Over the course of the project it was important to revisit the films and continue to evolve the image based on the previous layer. Using the actual print 'in-state' as a guide, Jon was able see a truthful rendering of the layers as the transformed from black ink on film, to stencils on mesh, and ultimately glorious colour on paper! This process was able to capture the spontaneity of creating the print as if it were a unique drawing or painting, and not separated through the means of processing.
The final results are a dynamic reflection of human input at every step. Peppered with soul, Jon's imagery comes alive through printmaking and all it's inky goodness!
