Jim Verburg expands the language of printmaking, using its tools in painterly and unconventional ways. His recently produced Shape/Layer Blueprint diazotype print series demonstrates his strong inclination for media experimentation. In these works, Verburg’s inspired engagement of tarlatan – an open weave cotton fabric utilized for intaglio printmaking – draws considered attention to the material’s unique aesthetic potential. Through the diazotype image-making process, layers of tarlatan pieces exposed to light on photo-sensitive paper create overlapping, abstract shapes; the fibrous nature of tarlatan rendered in highly-refined detail.
