Lattice Rainbow was created as a Smokestack Special Exhibition Edition for the occasion of Jessica’s 2023 solo-exhibition, “Distance of Desire”. Speaking to the urban experience informing the piece, she shares:
The photograph for “Lattice Rainbow” was shot at Highway 407 Station. As part of the new University subway extension, this station was one that I would go back and forth on while visiting my mom in the hospital on the way to Vaughan. There is a colourful window artwork by David Pearl that casts coloured shadows across the architecture at different points of the day, and I spent a lot of time going in those spaces and watched as the light changed, moved, became sharper and softer over the days and seasons. The folding structure came about slowly as i was experimenting with ways i could both cut and fold the and artwork without letting it fall apart so I created this staggered waterbomb tessellation.
