Nigerian born artist, Abraham O. Oghobase, investigates the narrative and material potential of images. Oghobase’s 2025 Analog Print Residency at Smokestack supported the development of his image explorations into silkscreen printmaking. Notes to Self 02-05, an expansive work created during his time in residence, was informed by his research and personal response to the historical photographic archive of the Herskovits Library of African Studies at Northwestern University, Chicago. Select 19th century images from this archive – distilled as silhouettes and presented across a series of 9 banners – propose new readings of the archive’s photographic record.
