Canadian photographer, Dianne Bos, investigates light, nature and perception using a wide range of distinctive photographic processes and tools. Herbarium II: Photo(synthesis) Album presents a new body of work that expands upon her most recent experimentations with chlorophyll printing.
An herbarium is a collection of dried plant specimens used for scientific study. In these works, Bos transforms her own herbarium into a photo album by using sunlight to create images on leaves. The resulting chlorophyll prints are made using the natural chemistry at work in a living plant – what could be considered the ultimate sustainable photographic process. The images Bos has selected to print ‘into’ the leaves reflect connections between the natural and built environment: structural similarities between the botanical anatomy of leaves & trees and the form & design of architecture that suggest associations between recognized impermanence and perceived stability.
Dianne Bos has presented her photography and installation work in solo and group exhibitions across Canada and internationally in the United States and Europe. Her work may be found in private, corporate and museum collections including the Art Gallery of Hamilton, ON; the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery, AB; the Walter Phillips Gallery at the Banff Centre, AB; the National Gallery of Canada, ON and Canadian embassies in Paris and Belgium. In addition to her artistic practice in the visual arts, Bos’s professional interests have extended into the field of music, publishing, and teaching. Bos is currently based in Ontario.
