Anna Church
Finding Our Light Through the Darkness
Anna Church explores the intersection of human behaviour and existence with the natural world through a multidisciplinary artistic practice that transcends the boundaries of traditional photography. Capturing uniquely created conceptual sculptures and still-life arrangements, Anna’s photographic prints belie their 3-dimensional origins while serving as spaces for metaphorical and visual investigations.
Finding Our Light Through the Darkness brings together works from two collections, Be the Light and Supernatural, that embody Anna’s fascination with the interconnectedness of life and the profound interplay between light and darkness. In the natural ecosystem, fungi mycelium networks of the forest floor’s dark undergrowth support the plants and trees above as they utilize the light of the sun to transform these nutrients and energy into life-sustaining oxygen for all living things. Likewise, Anna’s Be the Light and Supernatural collections consider how individual humans living within communities can collectively have a compassionate commitment toward transformational change by giving light and nutrients to one another.
In a world often consumed by chaos and uncertainty Finding Our Light Through the Darkness explores the duality of existence, echoing the intricate dance between light and shadow; life and decay. Anna invites us to reflect on our own humanity and the personal and collective roles and responsibilities towards each other and our environment – a renewed appreciation for the fragile balance of nature and our place within it.
