Smokestack is pleased to present a conversation between exhibiting artist, Panya Clark Espinal, and Tobi Bruce, Head of Exhibitions and Collections & Chief Curator at the Art Gallery of Hamilton. Reflecting on Clark Espinal’s most recent print-based project on view, Material Redistribution – Hamilton, this discussion will focus around the development and production of the project, and Clark Espinal’s dynamic relationship with the material that informed its creation.

Panya Clark Espinal holds a diploma in Experimental Art and Sculpture Installation from the Ontario College of Art and an MFA in Criticism and Curatorial Practice from OCADU. Over her 30-year artistic practice, Clark Espinal’s works have been presented in numerous exhibitions across Canada and internationally in Europe, Asia, and South America. Her public art commissions may be found across various locations in the Toronto Transit Commission; BMO Place, Toronto; Mississauga Transitway Bus Line; Covenant House, Toronto; and The Rehabilitation Institute of Toronto to name a select few. Clark Espinal lives and works in Toronto, ON.
Tobi Bruce is Head of Exhibitions and Collections & Chief Curator at the Art Gallery of Hamilton. Bruce has worked with public art collections for over 25 years, during which time she has dedicated her practice to fostering community engagement with public collections and locally, nationally, and internationally informed exhibition programming. Her most recent curatorial project is WONDER: the real, the surreal, and the fantastic currently on view at the Art Gallery of Hamilton.
